Director Tommy Wirkola turned this fairytale classic into a relentless and action-packed 3D extravaganza, shooting on location in Bamberg and Braunschweig - as well as on set in Studio Babelsberg - with ARRI Rental equipment.

The wildly imaginative Tommy Wirkola and his DoP Michael Bonvillain created a  unique world for their story, based on the eponymous fairytale by the Brothers Grimms. Key members of their creative team included  Florian Maier (lead stereographer), Albrecht Silberberger (gaffer) and Dieter Bähr (key grip). ARRI Media Services supplied the technology and know-how for this massive international 3D production from Paramount Pictures and co-producer Studio Babelsberg.

In addition to S3D Stereotec mid-size rigs and up to ten ALEXA digital cameras (ARRIRAW), the production relied on ARRI/Zeiss Master Prime lenses and Zeiss LWZ.2 lightweight zooms. Metadata was captured on ARRI DCS-2 Recorders while Codex Onboard Recorders were used for the uncompressed ARRIRAW data. Postproduction commenced on set in the 3D On-Set Service Trailer from ARRI Film & TV and included data transfer, quality control and archiving, as well as dailies grading and screening.

In addition to the above technology and services, ARRI Rental provided a full package of lighting and grip equipment, including the reliable Chapman G-3 Gyro Stabilized Head and various telescopic cranes from Technocrane und Servicevision.
